NEARLY 6000 children were registered for school last year using the council's new online enrolment - out of 6600 new pupils.

Thanks to the flyaway success of the new scheme, parents and carers are once again being urged to get in early to sign their child up for P1.

Enrolment goes live on the council's website this week to register five-year-olds for the new school term in August 2019.

Councillor Chris Cunningham, City Convener for Education, Skills & Early Years, said: “Starting school is a significant step in a child's and their parents' or carers' lives.

"We have some of the best schools in Scotland - with significant investment made in across our school estate over the last few years.

“It is important for families living in the area to check out and research their local school and register there - as we strongly advocate - local schools for local children.

"Parents of course still have the right to make a placing request, and do so for a variety of personal reasons, but we would always encourage them to consider their local school first."

The P1 school enrolment week will run from Monday, November 5 to Friday, November 9.

Following the success of the online form launched last year, the council is once again encouraging families across the city with children who turn five between March 1, 2019 and February 28, 2020 to log on and fill out the registration form.

Some 5988 parents and carers used the online form last year to register their child while 645 paper submissions were received.

Schools offered assistance for families who weren’t confident on computers and where English was not their first language while others held open days for prospective parents.

A total of 6633 pupils were registered to start primary school.

If submitting a placing request parents must register their child at their catchment school in the first instance.

Families will be notified of their confirmed P1 place no later than February 2019 and schools will be contacting parents and carers to invite their children to special open days and visits ahead of the new school term in August 2019.
