PEDAL power has propelled two schoolboys across Scotland to raise money for charity.

Ebon and Ansel Parkin decided to take on a challenge, which would see them cycle from Clydebank, west of Glasgow, across the country and back to their home in Dunbar.

The 100-mile trek, where they were joined by dad Dan, with family friend Davy Scott also lending a hand, saw the two brothers setting off at about 7.20am.

Dad Dan was impressed by their efforts, which saw them raise more than £600 for The Wave Project, as they pedalled along cycle paths, canal paths and roads.

He said: “I certainly am proud. A lot of people have said ‘wow, 100 miles’. If you do a lot of cycling maybe that does not seem that far but for little, short legs like Ansel, his bike is tiny and he cycled further than we did technically.”

The quartet set off from near the Erskine Bridge before heading east to Lenzie and on towards West Lothian.

They then followed the Union Canal into Edinburgh and then onto to East Lothian, following the coast through Musselburgh and North Berwick.

Finally, the tired cyclists reached their destination on Dunbar’s Retreat Gardens after eight hours and nine minutes in the saddle.

Dunbar Grammar School pupil Ebon said: “I didn’t want to be glued to the telly and I wanted something challenging to work hard on. Riding 100 miles sounded like a great idea.”

The idea came about at Christmas when the family were discussing potential new year’s resolutions.

Nine-year-old Ansel, who attends Dunbar Primary School, and big brother Ebon, 12, are keen surfers and had already agreed to take on the challenge before deciding to do their bit for The Wave Project.

Ansel said: “I wanted to set myself a challenge for this year. I thought about what I liked best. I love cycling. So, I set a target of riding 100 miles.”

The charity, which brings people together through surfing, is based at Belhaven Bay.

It aims to increase youngsters’ confidence and feel less anxious through surfing sessions.

Alison Young, coordinator of The Wave Project, thanked the duo for their help. She said: “Thank you so much boys, look forward to seeing you in the surf soon!”
