A PUBLIC consultation will be held about the best site for a community shelter in North Berwick.

That comes after North Berwick Youth Project ditched plans to revamp the shelter at the Gladsclune area of the town following complaints from local residents.

Douglas Paul, chairman of Glasclune Residents Association, told the Courier earlier this summer that the proposals to redevelop the run-down shelter and turn it into a youth shelter were "second-rate."

He added: "We feel that it is the wrong site for this.

“We are open to the accusation that it’s because it is at the back of our house and that’s partly fair – ideally we’d like to see the shelter pulled down."

Mr Paul, alongside half a dozen other local residents, attended a meeting of North Berwick Community Council (NBCC) last week.

Lauren Cowie, manager from North Berwick Youth Project, also attended, and revealed their initial plans for Glasclune have now been shelved.

"We do not want to fight against people for this," she told the NBCC meeting in the Hope Rooms.

And she added: "We have listened to the feedback from local residents and we feel like we should look at alternative sites."

Previously Mr Paul and his wife Kathryn told the Courier they would be "delighted" to help the youth project with fundraising.

And the re-iterated that stance at last week's meeting.

Mrs Paul said: "We have offered to fundraise with you and help manage the project and we'd be delighted to do that."

Ms Cowie thanked them for their offer.

However, Mrs Paul also said the run-down shelter remained a problem.

"It is 20 feet from our bedroom window and recently there's been homeless people sleeping in it.

"It still needs sorted out."

Mr and Mrs Paul have previously said they'd like the shelter knocked down.

The public consultation into a future site for the community shelter will take place in the Hope Rooms next Wednesday from 7pm.

All are welcome to attend.
