A BRIDGE in North Berwick has been blasted as "an accident waiting to happen" by a concerned resident.

And traffic lights could be installed at the problem site, on Ware Road, to help solve the problem.

A local resident – who asked not be named – attended a meeting of North Berwick Community Council (NBCC) to voice her concerns over the speed and volume of traffic travelling over the bridge on Ware Road.

She said: "The problem is getting worse – at school times I have had two near misses this term all because cars come over [the bridge] at the same time [as pedestrians walk over]."

Olwyn Owen, interim vice-chairwoman of NBCC who chaired the meeting in the Hope Rooms, said: "We have had lot of people come to us recently about speeding in the town."

She asked fellow NBCC members if it was possible for a 20 miles per hour limit to be rolled out across the town – and suggested contacting Dunbar Community Council to find out more information – a 20mph limit is in force in parts of Dunbar.

Councillor Jim Goodfellow, a North Berwick Coastal ward member, offered some advice to the Ware Road problems

He said: "There are a few possible solutions – getting bollards and blocking it off completely or putting in traffic lights.

PC Ian Paterson, community officer, attended the meeting with colleague PC Deborah Gray.

Mr Paterson said that blocking off the Bridge completely could be the best way forward.

But Ian Watson, another interim vice-chairwoman of NBCC, felt that was not the best option, as it would merely divert traffic up Glenorchy Road.

And Sue Northrop, another community councillor, said: "The problem would be solved if people would stop and take their time driving."

Mr Watson agreed: "It comes down to driver education."

After a lengthy debate on the issue, NBCC agreed to contact their Dunbar counterparts to find out more about implementing a 20mph restriction.
