FORMER Hibs and Hearts stars are getting ready to pull on their boots once again for a derby with a difference.

Retired Jambos and Hibees players will line up at North Berwick High School on Sunday afternoon to raise funds for Teen Challenge.

The national charity offers support to youngsters who have been part of families with drug and alcohol issues.

In one corner will be former Hibs stars like Steve Cowan and Micky Weir, who played more than 250 times for the Easter Road side between them. In the other corner, Hearts stars like Dave McPherson and two-time Scotland international Gary McSwegan will line up.

And there is an East Lothian rivalry as well, with ex-Hibs and Scotland frontman Garry O’Connor, who lives in North Berwick, and Haddington Athletic’s manager Joe Hamill on opposite sides.

O’Connor, 34, met up with John Clifford and Lauren Venesky, who are organising the game, and encouraged as people to go along, with the game kicking off at 3pm.

He said: “It is about giving something back.

“What John and Lauren are working for, they are giving all their time up to charities. For me to be able to do that is something positive. That is what I intend to do in the future: help causes like this and try to do something positive.”

Tickets are £10 for adults and concessions and youngsters £5.

O’Connor, who now runs his own football academy, will be hoping for success after playing in a previous charity game where Hearts won with two injury-time goals.

Joining the stars will be youngsters from a variety of clubs throughout the county.

Matt Bennison, who coaches at Haddington Athletic, was looking forward to the tie, with each of the youngsters coming out with the teams and receiving a memento to mark the day.

He said: “It is great to be involved in something like this.

“We do a lot of things in the community, like the £1 a player on a Friday where they can come and play.”
