THE new senior leadership team at North Berwick High School are settling well into their roles.

Adam Whiteside and Rowan Baxter were elected Head Boy and Head Girl, with Gregor Griffiths and Rosie Hamilton their deputies.

Rowan, 17, explained the selection process for the school’s senior team.

She told the Courier: “Loads of people put their names forward this year. I think there were five boys and seven or eight girls.

“We had to give a speech in front of our whole year, and then there were interviews with the headteacher and depute head.”

A vote was then taken, where the quartet were selected for the roles, with both staff and pupils having their say.

Adam, also 17, said: “It is nice knowing you’ve got the support of your peers, but also the staff as well.

“I think that makes a big difference.”

Rowan, meanwhile, admitted to having reservations about putting her name forward, adding: “I decided not to do it so many times”, while Gregor said he would “close the door to anything like this normally”.

During their final year at the school, the team are hoping to implement some of the pledges they put forward in their applications.

Rowan said: “We had to put forward three pledges each, but then we realised to do 12 would be quite a lot, so we picked one each, and Gregor and I are sharing one.”

They are keen to introduce PE for sixth-year pupils, while Adam is hoping to put more emphasis on the school’s house points system.

Rosie, meanwhile, wants the school bulletin sent out electronically each day.

The quartet, who have been working on their leavers’ hoodies in recent weeks, admit their roles are “a lot of work”, but are enjoying the responsibility.

Depute head girl Rosie said: “It has been good to feel like you are giving back.”
