A FLASH flood ripped up nearly 30 metres of road surface and sent boulders crashing onto it during a sudden downpour.
The B6355 Gifford to Cranshaws road is shut at the section between Whiteadder Reservoir and Redstone Rigg, after torrential rain caused a burn to break its banks.
The force of the water sent boulders from the stream crashing ont the road and cracked the surface itself as it flooded.
The incident yesterday evening has left the road unpassable.
Music fans have been warned to find a new route to this weekend's Audio Soup Festival which is being held at Cranshaws.
Organisers issued a warning to festival goers to avoid the road.
They said: "Due to last night's extreme weather, part of the B6355 Gifford to Cranshaws road is damaged and the road has been closed and will remain closed all weekend. This is one of the main routes to Soup.
"The best road to Soup is taking the A1 South to Grantshouse then turn right onto the A6112 to Duns. Go as far as Preston then turn to the right on the B6365 that will take you all the way to Soup.
"This road is totally fine, the site is fine, the crew are fine, we are all cracking on and looking forward to seeing you on the field."
East Lothian Council said it was working with Scottish Borders Council to reopen the damaged section of the road which straddles the two local authority boundaries.
