A NEAR three-year project to refurbish and extend Spott Village Hall has been completed.

The village’s community association has been working tirelessly to improve the building, which is home to a Scottish dancing group and the village’s WRI among other groups.

Elaine Fell, chairwoman of the community association, was delighted to see work coming to an end and described it as “a massive achievement” for the committee.

She said: “We had two sets of objectives when we set out.

“We wanted to maintain and improve what is a listed building, to protect it for the future and to make sure it is there for future use.

“We also wanted to get it used now because it has a fantastic view and location and we are hoping to get it hired out for as much as possible.”

About £200,000 has been spent on the building, with funding coming through Viridor Credits and East Lammermuir Community Council.

An extension has been added to the building, while windows have been replaced, as well as work carried out in the main hall to show the natural beams in the ceiling.

Mrs Fell, who works as a modern studies teacher at Dunbar Grammar School, was hopeful the hall, which was recently home to a wedding, would now be used by an increasing variety of groups, ranging from arts and pilates classes to parties and social occasions.

The community association is hosting an open day in the hall, 1pm-4pm, on Sunday, November 22, to showcase what the building has to offer. Refreshments will be served.
