There was a second try-scoring delight inside a week for North Berwick youngster Lewis Carmichael (pictured), but it was not enough to stop Scotland under-20s’ second defeat of the World Rugby under-20s Championships, this time at the hands of Ireland.

Carmichael, one of the Scots retained in the starting line-up following a heavy defeat to New Zealand, went over early in the second half to reduce the arrears after a disappointing performance in the first 40 minutes.

Ireland, though, were comfortably ahead and held on for victory despite Carmichael’s fifth try at under-20s level in his 16th cap – an impressive record for a lock.

Ruaridh Knott went close moments before Carmichael’s try, but the Queen Margaret University student did go over late on to bring the Scots back to within range, but time was against them and the Irish youngsters held on.

Victory for Ireland avenges a defeat at the hands of Carmichael and Co. in the under-20s Six Nations earlier this year.

Scotland are still winless in the competition, but were hoping to change that on Wednesday when they faced Argentina. Ally Miller, the other county representative, was not involved in the Ireland match, after taking a knock against the Baby Blacks in the opener.

The former Musselburgh and PL man returned for the battle with Argentina on Wednesday, starting in a new-look back-row, while Carmichael was rested after playing every minute of the opening two matches.
