There was a good turnout for the 56th annual North Berwick 7s tournament on Saturday, and they witnessed Gala YM collect the trophy.

Peebles were their opponents in the final, having seen off Haddington in round 1 and Musselburgh in the semi-final, while a strong YM side ended the hosts’ chances of regaining the trophy with victory in their last-four clash.

After their elmination from the main tournament, Haddington dropped to the plate competition, and enjoyed success, seeing off Merchistonians – who had a man red carded – to set up an all-county meeting with Ross High in the final.

And it was the Reds who ultimately came out on top, with their McCutcheon Plate win dedicated to former player Armandt Pryor, who died last Sunday.

In the main competition, the Stewart Cup, East Lothian interest had ended at the last four, but that did not prevent a big crowd taking in an entertaining contest between Gala YM and Peebles.

Both sides showed glimpses of their 7s prowess, but it was a strong YM side who prevailed.

Meanwhile, the under-18s 10s tournament took place ahead of the 7s, with the home club claiming victory.

They recorded impressive victories over Haddington (53-0), Portobello-Ross High (81-0) and Dunbar (63-0), while Haddington finished the tournament as runners-up.
