There were celebrations for Ross High Rugby Club on Saturday as they were named East Division 3 champions after trouncing Queensferry on the road.

The club knew a win, coupled with a Broughton defeat, would be enough to secure the title, with promotion already wrapped up, and they duly dispatched their hosts, running out 63-0 winners.

And the bonus-point win was all that was required for the club’s celebrations to begin, as defeat for Broughton at the hands of Gala YM meant Ross were champions.

The dramatic events of the weekend saw Ross High players waiting on the field at Queensferry before news of Gala’s win over Broughton broke, and the celebrations began.

Club president John Tinlin told Courier Sport: “I am so proud of what this team has achieved.

“For such a small squad to have [also] reached the [BT Bowl] semi-final is a great achievement.

“The guys are enjoying playing rugby again and who knows how far this team could go. It’s been a tough few seasons of late and it’s great to see success being celebrated in the club again.” Tinlin was full of praise for head coach Robert Baillie, with the coach and president enjoying successful first years in their respective roles.

He added: “Huge thanks has to go to Robert [Baillie] and Andrew Fleming, and to Ross Watters who has assisted since he’s been injured.” The game itself saw Ross High run in nine tries, with Liam Law bagging a hat-trick and Lee Waterston a double, with all nine conversions landed from the boot of Alex Mackay.

The other try scorers were Chris Miller, Gareth Glynn, Nick Tinlin and skipper Stuart Ross, in an emphatic win, their 11th from 12 league outings this term.

The club’s president, who was at Queensferry to watch the victory, had one ear on events in the Borders, where Gala YM’s victory was enough to secure the title for the county club.

He added: “The game itself was a bit of a blur. There was a tense wait on the result coming through [from Gala] as they had kicked off half an hour after us. I was receiving updates but didn’t want to let the guys know, just to keep them focused on the task in hand, because we needed the bonus-point win to keep the pressure on Broughton.” Tinlin is now looking forward to the club’s assuault on the 7s circuit, before they regroup in the summer ahead of next season’s campaign in East Division 2.

Tinlin added: “We’re now looking forward to the 7s circuit, and I think this team may surprise quite a few people.”
