A pair of young rugby stars were last week rewarded with professional contracts.

Scotland under-20 captain Tommy Spinks has signed a deal with Glasgow Warriors, while under-18 back-row Ally Miller will join Edinburgh Rugby.

Spinks, who recently led his country in the Junior World Championships in New Zealand, will join the club’s elite development squad, and work alongside the senior squad.

He will hope to follow the likes of Edinburgh duo Grant Gilchrist and Matt Scott, now both Scotland caps, through the programme, as he joins Gregor Townsend’s side from London Scottish.

Spinks, 20, made nine appearances in two years with the Richmond-based club.

Meanwhile Miller, the former Musselburgh and Preston Lodge number eight, will link up with the likes of David Denton and Tim Visser at the Capital club.

A professional deal is recognition for his impressive record with George Watson’s College, where he captained the school to three consecutive Brewin Dolphin Scottish Schools Cup titles in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

He captained Scotland under-19 against Australia in the autumn and will now hope to press for a place in Alan Solomons’ side.
