THERE were mixed fortunes for a pair of North Berwick rugby aces in this year's Scottish varsity matches on Saturday.

Scotland Women's internationalist Megan Gaffney starred as the University of Edinburgh claimed women's success at BT Murrayfield.

The 24-year-old scored four tries and was named player of the match as the University of Edinburgh thrashed their St Andrews University counterparts 97-0

They scored 15 tries, including two 60m efforts from Gaffney, who spent time training with the Team GB squad ahead of the summer's Olympics, earlier in the year.

Meanwhile, back-row Scott Burnside, who spent time living in North Berwick, was among the University of Edinburgh team who lost the men's match 24-12.

The Scotland U20 cap scored a try to narrow the gap early in the second half, but was unable to prevent St Andrews securing victory.

After the win, Gaffney and a host of her university colleagues, joined the Scotland Women team for a camp, while Burnside will return to club duty with Currie.
