Haddington 41 Greenock Wanderers 15

HADDINGTON recorded a first home league win of the new campaign on Saturday, as they thrashed Greenock Wanderers.

Rhodri Thomas' side ran in seven tries, with full-back James Ferguson crossing twice.

Back three colleagues Kyle Adams and Mark Robertson and scrum-half Jack Hamilton also went over, as did prop Garry Cockburn, while they were also awarded a penalty try.

Head coach Thomas was delighted with the win. He told Courier Sport: ""I was really pleased that we followed up our excellent win in Orkney with another bonus point win.

"Our confidence is growing and we scored a couple of excellent tries and looked comfortable with the ball for large periods of the game.

"There are still areas we can improve and the players are working hard in training in order to continue the recent good form."

The Reds made a perfect start, as a well-worked team move allowed Robertson space down the touchline, and he seemed certain to score before he was hauled down by a high tackle with the line at his mercy.

The referee awarded a penalty try, which stand-off Gareth Pritchard converted for 7-0 after just three minutes.

Adams crossed for the first of his pair on 14 minutes, before Robertson finally got his try just two minutes later.

Greenock came into the match more through their pack, the Reds look dangerous out wide, and Ferguson exploited some weak tackling to add his name to the score sheet on the half-hour.

Prichard's conversion ensured a healthy half-time advantage, with the visitors registering only a penalty in the first half.

Ferguson extended the Reds' lead with his second try just moments after the restart, while Garry Cockburn went over before scrum-half Hamilton crossed to wrap up a big win.

Thomas' side welcome Perthshire to Neilson Park on Saturday

The coach said: "Perthshire will be a tough game – their recent results have not been great but they are a good side and have suffered with injury problems at the beginning of this season.

"We had two hard games against them last year with a win each and I'm sure Saturday will be another hard-fought contest, but one I'm confident we can win."
