North Berwick 17-15 Penicuik.

A last-minute conversion took North Berwick to the final of the BT Edinburgh Shield against a stubborn Penicuik side at Recreation Park on Saturday.

Nick Hammond's try in the last minute levelled the scores, before Liam West's touchline conversion put North Berwick in the final against Murrayfield Wanderers.

The county outfit went into the match as favourites, a league above their opponents, but the visitors held their own throughout a thrilling contest.

Penicuik started the brighter, and they spent a lot of time in the North Berwick half early on.

Initially the hosts' defence held firm, but the visitors opened the scoring when their heavier pack muscled over for the game's first try.

The conversion was landed, and they extended their lead to 0-10 with a penalty.

North Berwick were dealt a further blow when vice-captain Ben Inglis was shown a yellow card, but they coped well while down to 14 men, and when Inglis returned it remained 0-10.

And he made amends for the yellow card as he scored the county side's first try of the day, barging over near the posts from close range.

Liam West converted, and the sides turned round with the lower league outfit 7-10 ahead.

North Berwick's second half got off to the worst possible start as they conceded another try just minutes in when Penicuik drove over from a line-out.

The conversion was missed – a kick that would prove crucial in the outcome of the match – but Penicuik held a 7-15 lead early in the second half.

An upset was still on the cards when Penicuik, with only seconds remaining, were awarded a scrum in the North Berwick 22, but a big scrum won the county side a penalty.

They went quickly and moved the ball through Murray West, Ritchie and finally Hammond, who raced over in the corner to level the scores.

That left Liam West with a kick for victory, and the stand-off landed the extras to spark scenes of celebration at Recreation Park.

Their unbeaten run under Jason White continues, but they will be tested once more on Saturday as they face St. Boswells in a top of the table clash that may seal the destiny of the East League Division 1 title.
