Wallyford’s Commonwealth Games star Micky Yule finished fifth at the IPC Powerlifting Asian Open Championships in Kazakhstan earlier this week.

That was despite the county star – who lost both legs after stepping on an improvised explosive device in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, five years ago while serving as a soldier – lifting a mammoth 190kg in the up-to-72kg category.

Iraq’s Rasool Moshin won the event, after lifting a world record 225kg.

And despite missing out on a top-three place, Yule was pleased to have put in another good performance as he continues his qualification for next year’s Rio Olympics.

The former Staff Sergeant said: “I’m very pleased to have lifted 190kg in another Rio qualifier, but that I also managed to break into the top eight in another weight group (up-to-72kg).

“I’m now looking ahead to the European Championships in Hungary in November, where I’d really like to bring home a medal.” And Martin Colclough, head of sports recovery at Help for Heroes, which supports Yule, added: “A really strong performance from Micky, and a great time to pull it out of the bag on his journey for Rio qualification. We’ve seen a fantastic uprise in participation in powerlifting as part of our sports recovery programme in recent months, and it’s performances like this that really inspire other wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women to get involved.

“We look forward to continuing to support Micky on this exciting journey.” The support provided to the 36-year-old forms part of the Help for Heroes’ partnership with the British Paralympic Association & British Weight Lifting to introduce military personnel to Paralympic sport.

Yule will now head to the IPC Powerlifting European Open Championships in Eger, Hungary in November.
