EAST Lothian athletes’ incredible success at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow was led by a heroic performance by Team Scotland flagbearer Euan Burton, in his last ever competitive bout.

Burton, a former pupil at Pencaitland Primary School and Ross High School, beat Pakistan’s Shah Hussain Shah in the final of the -100kg category on Saturday to claim the gold medal.

His win sparked memorable scenes in the SECC, with the home fans being joined in the stands by Burton’s wife, Gemma Gibbons, to cheer him to glory.

Earlier, Gibbons had claimed silver for England, but put her disappointment of losing the gold medal match behind her to support her husband as he bowed out from competition in style.

The 35-year old had announced he would walk away from competing after the Commonwealth Games, and concentrate on nurturing the talent of tomorrow in his coaching role with sportscotland. Commonwealth gold also capped a whirlwind week for the judo star, who led Team Scotland into the opening ceremony at Celtic Park.

Success in Glasgow will have eased the pain of Burton’s failure at the Olympics in 2012, where he was widely tipped to do well but was eliminated in the first round.

Images of a dejected Burton became among the most iconic of the London Games, but two years later it will be the jubilant judoka leaping in celebration that is sure to be etched in the memory.
