Musselburgh’s promotion push continues at pace after they saw off Kirkcaldy on Saturday.

The home side put pressure on Grant Talac’s men early on and went in front after Musselburgh were penalised at the breakdown, winger Jamie Moffat landing a fifth-minute penalty, soon adding a second.

The home side had looked in control of the early exchanges, but Musselburgh got themselves back in the match with several phases of tight play, Neil McNairn and Willie Fleming to the fore. Danny Owenson kicked a penalty to the corner and from the resulting rolling maul, Euan O’Brien crashed over on his return to the side.Owenson missed the conversion, so Kirkcaldy still led.

There was a lengthy delay for an injury to the hosts’ scrum-half but once the game was restarted, the county side struck again – Rory Watt going over after a slick move from a five-metre scrum. Owenson again missed the kick in tricky conditions, but Burgh led 6-10 at half-time.

Talac’s side took control of the match early in the second half, thanks to another powerful play from the forwards. A series of mauls took them close to the Kirkcaldy line and, after being repelled by the hosts on a number of occasions, Burgh were not to be denied as Willie Fleming got his name on the scoresheet for 6-15.

Andrew Binikos’ contribution has been invaluable to the county club in recent weeks, and his superb solo effort was the pick of Saturday’s tries. He ghosted through a huge hole in the Blues’ defence and scored underneath the posts to secure the bonus point.Owenson converted and made the game all-but safe at 6-22.

Musselburgh’s ‘band of brothers’ continued as Michael Fleming replaced Declan Slaven, making a total of four sets of brothers taking part in one game, the Slavens, Owensons, Watts and Flemings, all of whom have come through the ranks at Musselburgh.

McNairn was yellow-carded for an infringement at a ruck and Burgh were further punished when, following a period of forward pressure, Turner went in under the posts with five minutes to go. Moffat converted for 13-22.

But Musselburgh sealed a hard-fought victory with a late try, with James Doig the man going over. The conversion was missed, but Musselburgh returned home with another five-point win.

Burgh have no game tomorrow (Saturday), and are back in action next weekend with the final local derby of the season with county rivals Haddington at Neilson Park.

The club’s Colts are in action on the back pitches at BT Murrayfield in the National Bowl final on Sunday, kick-off at 1pm.
