Musselburgh returned to winning ways with a thumping victory over Greenock Wanderers, on Saturday.

The club had named four sets of brothers in their squad, with Danny and Craig Owenson being joined in the side by Connor and Declan Slaven, William and Michael Fleming, and Sandy and Rory Watt. However, Declan Slaven was forced to pull out through illness, meaning a reshuffle for head coach Grant Talac ahead of kick-off.

When the action did get under way, though, the home side were in front within the opening minute, as scrum-half Owenson dived over following a break from Rory Watt. He added the conversion, and it was 7-0 in a sign of things to come.

James Doig was the next to break through as Musselburgh continued to dominate, and the full-back offloaded to Rory Watt, and he crossed for the county club’s second try, before Owenson added the conversion.

And the home pack pushed the visitors over for their third try, with Luke Hutson emerging with the ball, before Owenson made it 21-0.

Greenock’s bad start got worse when Andy Love was sent to the sin bin and Hutson benefited from another pushover try to seal Musselburgh’s bonus point inside the first half.

The home pack were in total control, and a break from Andy Lamb resulted in their fifth try, with Tom Armstrong going over on his return to the side following injury. Owenson converted once more and it was 33-0.

Another pushover try followed for the hosts, with Hutson again on the scoresheet to complete a first-half hat-trick. Greenock had another man sent to the sin bin before the break, as the sides turned round with Musselburgh 40-0 to the good.

Neil McNairn and Craig Owenson were replaced by Dave Paton and Michael Fleming, meaning three sets of siblings had all taken the field.

The try of the day followed, as Andrew Cook broke through from inside his own half before pirouetting through the would-be tacklers to score. Owenson converted for 47-0.

Mitch Strachan made his 1st XV debut from the bench among the Musselburgh pack, and they continued their assault on the visitors. Another forward drive produced good ball for the backs, and Rory Watt was again on hand to cross for his second try of the day, while brother Sandy crossed just moments later. Owenson missed both conversions, but they were immaterial as Talac’s side led 57-0.

Willie Fleming was the next to add his name to the scoresheet, as he crashed over with brother Michael in support. Owenson found his kicking form once more as he made it 62-0.

Rory Watt completed his hat-trick as he went over near the end, while Conor Slaven’s try was Musselburgh’s 12th and last.

And the county side now travel to Almond Park tomorrow (Saturday) where they take on Livingston, currently bottom of National 2, and they will be hoping to leave West Lothian with another win as they continue their promotion push.
