Musselburgh recorded an impressive away win at the weekend, beating Whitecraigs 20-10 and maintaining their recent run of good form.

Willie Fleming returned to the starting line-up following injury, while Calum Kerr also came into the side for James Doig.

And the county club started brightly, with Steve Finigan continuing his good form in the back-row with some strong carries, aided by Declan Slaven and Fleming. The half-back pairing of Danny Owenson and Alfonso Horomeia were again controlling matters, and after the hosts infringed, scrum-half Owenson kicked the game’s first points.

The visitors extended their lead when Fleming, impressive on his return, held the final defender before putting Sandy Watt away. Owenson, having to deal with tricky conditions, was off target with the extras but it was a great start for Grant Talac’s side.

Against the run of play, the home side struck back, as Ryan Moffat added a penalty to reduce the gap to five points. That gave Whitecraigs some encouragement, with stand-off Gordon Stevenson beginning to control the game.

Despite their best efforts, the hosts were unable to add to their three-point tally in the opening 40 minutes, meaning the visitors held a slender lead at the break.

And the county club struck at the beginning of the second half to extend their advantage, as Watt crossed for his second after wonderful handling by Horomeia and Kerr, before Owenson put the icing on the cake with a fine conversion in difficult conditions.

The visitors had struggled to get into the match, particularly thanks to good work by Burgh at the breakdown, but when they eventually got the ascendency up front, Stevenson sent the ball wide, where Corbett was on hand to score. The conversion by Moffat was good to make it a five-point game once more.

Head coach Talac then made a couple of changes, as Mikey Roy and Neil McNairn replaced Euan O’Brien and David Paton.

The two new arrivals played a big part in Musselburgh’s final try, as the pack pushed Whitecraigs a full 30 metres, before Craig Owenson went over in the corner to continue his remarkable try-scoring run. The home side never gave up and were rewarded when they won a penalty, but Moffat was not able to add the points, meaning there would be no losing bonus point for the home side.

Talac’s men will be hoping to continue their good run of form on Saturday in the first of three successive home games, as they take on Kirkcaldy at Stoneyhill, with kick-off now 2pm.
