Musselburgh continued their impressive start to the season with another thumping win on the road at the weekend.

Grant Talac’s side went into the match at Greenock Wanderers without the services of the banned Mikey Roy, who was red-carded in the draw with Falkirk the previous weekend, but were able to recall prop Dave Paton, while James Peel started in the back-row.

Alfonso Horomeia moved from inside centre to stand-off as Tom Armstrong took the number 12 jersey, and Horomeia was instrumental in a number of the Burgh scores.

The visitors, playing at Fort Matilda for the first time in more than 30 years, won an early penalty, which Danny Owenson kicked to give them an early lead.

Owenson, Horomeia and Adam Hook all scored first-half tries and, with Owenson’s radar working well to convert all three, plus a further penalty, Burgh turned around 27-0 to the good at the interval.

Talac made a number of changes at half-time, and this did alter the game for a short period, with a try from Steve Finigan cancelled out by a converted Greenock score.

But it was not long before the county club were back in control of the match, as they scored three more tries, including two more for Hook to complete his hat-trick.

Prop Craig Owenson was sent for a 10-minute cooling-off period after stepping in to defend brother Danny following some suspicious use of the boot on the Musselburgh scrum-half, but Talac’s side survived without conceding any further points.

And the try of the day was left to the end, as the hosts broke clear, before an all-enveloping tackle by number eight Finigan turned the ball over and he galloped clear to score from all of 30 metres out.

Owenson completed an impressive kicking day by slotting the final conversion for his eighth success from nine attempts and a final score of 7-60.

Talac’s men are now just four points off top spot in National Division 2, and will face struggling Livingston at Stoneyhill on Saturday.
