Game number seven of Musselburgh’s sixth Superleague campaign saw them visit Penicuik Park for the first time in top tier action, their Midlothian hosts having come up from the Premier League in the close season after eight years trying for promotion, under the management of former Olive Bank defender Craig Meikle.

In the wake of Davie McGlynn’s departure for Bonnyrigg Rose, Walter Martyniuk and Allan Todd were joined in the dugout by Calvin Shand, who of course served Burgh as a player for several seasons before retiring at a relatively young age to join the Hibernian coaching set-up. The management team named among the substitutes 21-year-old loanee defender Andy Munro from Raith Rovers, who has previous junior experience from a loan spell at Sauchie.

In their white away strip, Burgh kicked off and they threatened the home goal with barely a minute gone but Brian Martin was blocked before he could find a team-mate in the box. Rennie for the hosts saw an effort blocked for a corner in the 11th minute, shortly before they took the lead through ex-Tranent stalwart James McPartlin, who beat Ally Adams with an angled effort.

Jordyn Sheerin shot just over the bar as Burgh sought an immediate response, and the striker brought a great fingertip save from Bejaoui minutes later with a powerful effort.

An anxious moment for Burgh midway through the first half saw home striker Killin in a one-on-one with Adams but he took the wrong option and the danger was quickly cleared.

There were one or two other nervy moments in the visitors’ defence but Musselburgh equalised in the 29th minute. A corner was headed clear but only as far as Steven Thomson on the edge of the box – his shot was going well wide but the ball struck Thomson’s former Olive Bank team-mate Ryan McCallum and was diverted towards the back of the net.

McCallum twice came close to atoning for his inadvertent part in the Musselburgh goal, while Lewis Turner brought a great save from Bejaoui, but at the interval the scoreline remained at 1-1.

A great save from the Penicuik keeper kept Sheerin from giving Burgh a very early second-half lead, and his opposite number Adams then saved well from Killin a couple of minutes later. Play raged from end to end and Sheerin then beat Bejaoui but his effort went wide.

It was an open, even game and Adams brought off an excellent save from Lister midway through the half, before not long afterwards again impressing with a stop from Jancyzk. Michael Hunter was close for Burgh but couldn’t force the ball home, and right at the end of the game Penicuik sub Millar saw a header hit the crossbar. In the end a draw was about right, after an entertaining 90 minutes.

Musselburgh remain in fourth place and they’ve a chance to consolidate their position on Saturday when they host Carnoustie Panmure, who dropped to the foot of the table after defeat at Bonnyrigg. Burgh have only lost one of eight previous meetings with Carnoustie but they’ll have to work for any reward.
