Tranent return to league summit after win

The three points won against Capital opposition restored Tranent to the top of the South Division table, with leaders Blackburn United earning only a point at Pumpherston.

This was a hard-earned victory for the Foresters Park side, and they'll look to build on the win tomorrow when they have a home fixture against Stoneyburn Juniors.

There was little between the teams in the first half and no-one was shocked that it was goalless after 45 minutes.

United started the second half in determined mode, but the visitors'defence and Sinclair Inglis in goal were in no mood to capitulate.

The introduction of substitute Mel Graham for Tranent on 72 minutes had a positive impact, with the striker eager to contribute after several weeks out injured.

The breakthrough came for Tranent with 14 minutes left, sub Gary Small - linked up well with Kenny Munro on the right - before freeing Joe Murray to race forward and fire beyond Burnside.

Murray was immediately withdrawn as manager Brian Johnston reinforced his midfield but United were unable to recovery from the disappointment of losing the goal, and Tranent almost grabbed a second goal three minutes from time when Jules Anderson smacked a shot off the crossbar.
