An exciting Premier League campaign came to a thrilling climax at Olive Bank last Saturday as Davie McGlynn"s Burgh men claimed the title with a resounding victory over the league"s bottom side.
Elsewhere, Newtongrange Star went into their derby match at Arniston Rangers on exactly the same points as Burgh and a just one goal behind on goal difference.
But Mathu King gave Burgh an early lead nine minutes in, hitting a first time shot home from around the penalty spot after Chris King played in a tempting ball from the left. Three minutes later the lead was doubled when Adam Nelson"s corner kick was met by the head of skipper Wes Mitchell.
The third goal came from a penalty when Paul Tansey was brought down in the box after 25 minutes. Paul Currie converted. It remained 3-0 at half-time, but news that Newtongrange were 2-0 up meant it was still extremely tight at the top, even more so when the Star scored their third goal two minutes into the second half.
Burgh concentrated on the task in hand though, and midway through the second half they scored their fourth of the afternoon following a fantastic flowing move from their own penalty area. Tansey sent a low ball in from the left which crossed the face of goal and fell perfectly for Currie to claim his second goal of the afternoon. Two minutes later a long ball found Chris King who rounded the goalkeeper to score.
Burgh were eventually crowned champions by the narrow margin of just three goals. Musselburgh still have an interest in the St Michael"s Cup before the season ends. Bonnyrigg Rose and Whitburn Juniors have yet to complete their quarter final to decide who visits Olive Bank in the last four.
