Gullane Junior Golf Club are celebrating success at a prestigious team championships, with victory set to send them to Spain in the New Year.

The county youngsters achieved victory at the Scottish Finals of Junior Team Golf at Kingsbarns Golf Club, St Andrews.

On their fourth visit to the finals in seven years, the young team came out on top in testing conditions to claim the title as they carded the best gross scores of 78.

The team went into the competition in good form, having claimed the East Lothian Team Scratch Strokeplay title, and they are also the current East Lothian Junior Golf League champions.

They were in impressive form throught the finals, despite testing weather conditions.

With the winds increasing through the day and the pins set in difficult positions, it was clear that anything approaching par golf was impossible. The Gullane team showed that their years of learning the game on Scotland’s Golf Coast had stood them in good stead for the tricky conditions of the tournament, as they held their nerve to claim victory.

The Gullane team included Scotland junior internationalist Joanne Free, who posted one of the impressive 78 scores, and was matched by Andrew Ni, who has represented the Lothians at County Junior level.

The team also included two sets of brothers, as captain Oliver joined brother William Ladbrooke, while James and Graeme Chalmers were also in the squad, and the winning team was completed by Calum Black.

Captain Ladbrooke, a graduate of clubgolf, was not to be outdone by Free and Ni, as he landed the third score of 78, with Oliver’s score also yielding the best net score of 73.

Conveners Martin Black and Gail Chalmers have built a strong team with more than 15 of the section playing during the season for the junior team, and their success was Gullane’s first win in the most sought-after team championship in junior golf. The team will now go on to represent Scotland against other Home Nations’ champions in Spain next March.
