LONGNIDDRY Primary School celebrated a second cup success with victory in the John Home Robertson Cup last week.

East Lothian Football development co-ordinators ran the competition from the 3G pitch at Middleshot Square in Prestonpans and with four pitches in constant use, and a girls tournament, they provided the 200 youngsters with a magnificent festival of football.

The Longniddry squad won seven of their eight matches, with a draw in the other meaning they were unbeaten through the whole tournament.

A 2-0 win over Windygoul Primary got the ball rolling, and 1-0 wins over St. Martin's and Dunbar Primary ensured the youngsters had maximum points after their opening three matches.

The boys then beat Musselburgh Burgh 1-0, before slamming three past Wallyford, then facing their toughest test in Stoneyhill.

In the game of the tournament both teams attacked relentlessly and the Musselburgh primary side may think themselves unlucky not to have won the match after crashing the ball against the Longniddry crossbar twice, but neither side was able to find the breakthrough as it ended goalless.

The village side went on to beat Kings Meadow 2-0 before racking up a convincing 4-0 victory over Prestonpans.

Having scored 16 goals and conceding just two goals the Longniddry squad were crowned tournament champions in this East Lothian wide cup competition.

Sheona Skinner, the school's headteacher, was over the moon with the win.

She said: "I'm absolutely delighted with how the boys played and am very proud of them all. It was a great tournament.

"Thanks go to our coach Scott Robertson for his support and for training the boys over the last 2 years.’

And Robertson echoed the headteacher's sentiments, adding: "What a great group of players. They are all so keen to play and put in the effort for their school. They deserve much credit for their endeavours.
