PRESTON Athletic U20 side completed a league and cup double at the weekend.

The Prestonpans outfit won the challenge cup after they saw off the challenge of Capital counterparts Spartans, the U20.

A thrilling 90 minutes ended goalless, so the game went to extra-time at Peffermill on Friday evening.

There was no breakthrough in the opening additional period, so the two teams turned round for the final half, still all square and with one eye on a penalty shoot-out.

The breakthrough finally came, though, in the final minute of the match, when Gavin Stevenson headed home from close range for the Panners.

They dropped deeper to defend their lead into injury time, and Spartans almost levelled the match, but a volley sailed just over the bar, much to the relief of the travelling Preston support.

A long stoppage for an injury meant more time was added at the end, but the Preston youngsters held on to claim their second trophy within a week.

The runners-up passed on their congratulations through social media, tweeting immediately after the match: "Congratulations to @PrestonAthletic on their cup win tonight."

Meanwhile, Scott Siegel, Preston's victorious captain, said: "Defended superbly for 119 minutes and got lucky with a great goal for one! A wins and win showed great character #Preston"

And his team-mates were delighted at securing another trophy, giving them a chance to complete a coveted treble.

Connor Brydon said: "Preston u20s Challenge Cup winners #trebleison," and Craig Nisbet, the senior side's manager, added: "Wasn't vintage but was deserved lads. Congratulations."

They will now prepare themselves for another cup final as they look to complete the treble.

They take on Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale in the Knockout Cup final, at Spartans' Ainslie Park, on Tuesday.
