A SPANISH club visited Musselburgh Windsor last week as they took part in a number of friendlies.

Nerja CFC, based about 35 miles outside Malaga, took three days to travel by coach to reach Pinkie Playing Fields.

Windsor fielded four teams from their 2005, 2004 and 2003 age groups taking on a mix of Spanish players.

The free-flowing games were exciting end-to-end encounters with plenty of goals to entertain the large support who watched on.

After the youngsters' matches, there was a coaches versus coaches fixture.

The Spanish visitors took a two-goal advantage but thanks to Windsor's Michael Hunter the score was levelled into the second half.

With seconds remaining it was the Scottish side that sealed the win with a third, before Scott Robertson, club president, blew the full-time whistle.

And the club president was delighted with how the trip went, and explained how it all came about.

He told Courier Sport: "It all happened by chance really - a guy, Keith Donaldson, who I believe is the Hibs stadium manager, was on holiday there and he said he'd speak to his local club and try to organise it.

"From that, someone contacted me and we got in touch with the club and arranged for them to come over."

After a three-day coach journey, the Windsor president admitted he "felt a wee bit sorry for the Spanish kids" but was delighted to welcome them to East Lothian.

He said: "It was great to have them and we got really lucky – the weather was superb and they all really seemed to enjoy it."

The players from both clubs then spent the afternoon in Inveresk Bowling Club, and heard from Nocki, Nerja head coach, and Robertson, before the Spaniards tried their hand at lawn bowls.

Robertson confirmed the club are now exploring the possibility of a return visit to Spain.

"I've love to take a team over, and it's near Malaga which is an airport well served from Edinburgh, so it's entirely possible that we might take Musselburgh kids over there some time."
