TRANENT football ace Dean Brett could be playing in the third tier of Scottish football next season after his Cowdenbeath side was relegated on Saturday.

Brett told Courier Sport last week he was confident of avoiding the drop, but a 2-1 aggregate loss in the play-off against Queens Park was enough to send the Fife side down.

It is their second relegation in as many seasons, after they dropped out of the Championship this time 12 months ago.

They lost the first leg, at Hampden Park last Wednesday, 2-0 thanks to a double from Chris Duggan for the hosts.

Brett and his colleagues responded and they won the second leg 1-0 at Central Park on Saturday thanks to Greig Spence's 19th goal of the season.

It was not enough, though, to save them from the drop.

Brett, who captained the side, tweeted after the match: "Gutted for all involved with @CowdenbeathFC. Great club"

Cowden fans also took to the social media site to thank the skipper, who now seems likely to leave the club in the summer.

John Stevens said: "Thanks for all your hard work and good luck in the future", while Alan Smart added: "Heartbroken tonight but a big thanks to @DeanBrett62 for everything."

Brett had been linked with a move to Falkirk this summer, and told Courier Sport last week he was unsure of his plans beyond the play-offs.
