Preston Athletic registered a vital home point as a late goal salvaged a draw against Whitehill Welfare yesterday (Wednesday).

The goal, by subsitute Connor Bryden, was enough to secure a point for Craig Nisbet's side 15 minutes from time, despite the Panners having been reduced to 10 men.

Another sub, Andy Noble, was given his marching orders by referee Alan Hogg for a rash challenge, picking up his second yellow card.

Whitehill had the better of the match early on, with Preston keeper Craig Pennycuick in good form to keep the visitors out on a number of occasions.

He was helpless to prevent them taking the lead after quarter of an hour, as John Williams dispatched a penalty past the Preston stopper to put Whitehill ahead.

Referee Hogg pointed to the spot after Stewart Davidson was judged to have handled in the area, and Williams' penalty flew into the roof of the net past keeper Pennycuik.

Preston enjoyed more of the ball after the break, with a good move seeing Gary Nicholson fire wide.

Gavin Stevenson also had a good chance for the hosts, but a bobble on the pitch took the power from his shot and it was pushed wide by Whitehill keeper Bryan Young.

Bryden struck from the penalty spot, and Preston nearly took all three points thanks to David Porcher late on, but his effort was well saved by Young.

The Panners take a break from league action this weekend, and will travel to New Countess Park to face Dunbar United.
