EAST Lothian Indoor Bowling Club has a strong-looking interest in the final stages of the joint Scottish Indoor Championships down for decision at Prestwick Ambassador IBC this weekend.

East Lothian champions Yvonne Veitch, Magaret Thomson and Emma Brown target the ladies triples title, with the Garden County trio continuing their quest for national glory with a semi-final clash against Marion Fraser, Kathleen Mackintosh and Margaret Durward of Aberdeen.

The encounter is staged at 2pm tomorrow (Saturday), with the final set to be staged on Sunday at 11am. The other last-four clash features West Lothian against Galleon.

On the international stage, there are huge congratulations to East Lothian young rising star Calvert Allison after he was selected for a Scotland under-18 side that will participate in a British Home International series on the weekend of October 13-14 at a venue still to be confirmed.

Allison will participate in both the pairs and fours disciplines.

However, there is once again local disappointment that newly crowned National Under-18 singles champion Calum Darling has yet again been overlooked by the selectors.

A senior side from East Lothian IBC head to West Lothian IBC in Livingston tomorrow (Saturday) to tackle holders Perth in the final of the Central District Seniors Top Six tournament.

Davie McLeod will spearhead the Garden County ‘auld yins’ challenge in the singles, Arthur Duncan and Alistair Russell team up in the pairs, while the triple features Kenny Boyd, Jim McLeod and Ronnie Douglas.

The action in the Jock Brodie Senior Challenge Cup, sponsored by Norman T Craig and Co-operative Funeral & Monumental Services, continued last Wednesday and East Lothian A qualified for the knockout semi-final stage following a comprehensive 8-0 points victory over Abbeyview.

In the other clash played, Teviotdale won the Borders derby with a 6-2 triumph over Tweedbank.

The semi-final draw has paired East Lothian A and East Lothian B, while defending champions Perth will play the highest runner-up from Section 2 and this will be known after the final qualifying games on Wednesday. Both semi-finals will be staged on Wednesday, with the grand final taking place the following Wednesday.

The youth side from East Lothian IBC enjoyed an excellent run in the Midlothian Youth Team tournament on Saturday before having to settle for runners-up spot behind Abbeyview.

On the domestic front at East Lothian IBC, the race for the Gents’ Singles Championship is hotting up, with the field whittled down to the semi-final stage. Holder Willie Wood is chasing his fourth title in six years but standing in his way is former two-times champion Scott Kennedy.

The other last-four encounter features former Edinburgh IBC champion Billy Mellors against ex-West Lothian IBC star Scott Logan. Both semi-finals will be staged on Monday evening at 8.30pm.

At the same time, the semi-finals of the Gents’ Junior Singles will also be played, with 2011 champion Ross Thomson against soon-to-be-national under-18 cap Calvert Allison, and current junior cap Ewan Fallen versus former Portobello singles champion Dean Mackintosh.

The Ladies’ Singles Championship has also reached the semi-final stage and features four-time champion Janet Fairnie against 2010 victor Yvonne Veitch, while the other tie involves internationalist Emma Brown against Pauline Turner. Both semi-finals will be staged on Monday evening at 6.30pm.

The action in the Gents’ Senior Singles Championship has also reached the last four and they were down for decision yesterday (Thursday) at 4pm, when Alan Morgan tackled John P Hamilton and John McLeod met Lessel Middler.
