NORTH Berwick rugby ace Lewis Carmichael made his first Scotland start as they were beaten by USA in Houston yesterday (Sunday) morning.

Carmichael, who impressed in his debut off the bench in the 48-10 win over Canada in the first match of the summer tour, was handed a starting role in a hugely inexperienced side.

The Scots scored three first-half tries, Blair Kinghorn and George Turner's scores either side of a penalty try gave them a 21-6 half-time lead.

After the break, the USA dominated the match as hooker Joe Taufete’e scored twice, while Hanco Germishuys' try on the hour put the hosts in front for the first time.

It was a position they maintained despite the best efforts of the young Scots, who gave themselves a chance of snatching victory as Dougie Fife scored out wide with the final play.

Kinghorn's touchline conversion went wide and the US celebrated a first victory over a Tier One rugby nation for nearly 100 years.

And the 23-year-old was confirmed as part of the squad that will travel to Argentina for the final match of the tour.

Saturday's tour finale is live on Channel 4 and kick off is at 8.40pm
