COUNTY bowls legend Alex 'Tattie' Marshall missed out on a record fifth gold medal in the men's pairs at the Commonwealth Games in Australia, but did win silver.

Marshall and former East Lothian player Paul Foster went into the competition looking to defend the title they won in Glasgow four years ago.

They were undone by Welsh pair Marc Wyatt and Daniel Salmon, who edged a thrilling final 12-10 to claim a surprise gold medal.

Victory for Marshall would have given him a fifth gold, taking him past the Scottish record held jointly by sprinter Allan Wells and para-cyclist Neil Fachie.

Marshall, 51, could still win gold in the men's fours later in the Games.

Marshall and Foster, himself a former Garden County player, led 5-1 in the fifth end but Wales fought back to lead 11-10 going into the final end.

With his final bowl, skip Wyatt produced a perfect draw to nestle up on to the jack, which Marshall could not better with his last effort.
