AN ORMISTON boxer is celebrating becoming Scottish super heavyweight elite champion after victory on Saturday.

Gary Fairgrieve produced a spirited performance to see off ex-professional rugby player Nick Campbell, of Denniston McNair Boxing Club, in the final.

Former Glasgow Warriors and Jersey professional Campbell turned to boxing after his rugby career stalled but he was beaten by 33-year-old Fairgrieve in Saturday evening’s final.

At 6ft 8in, the ex-rugby player held a significant height advantage over his rival, a former member of the now-defunct East Lothian Boxing Club (see story on page 13), but Fairgrieve boxed cleverly to win by a unanimous points decision.

Fairgrieve, who joined Leith Victoria AAC following the demise of the Haddington-based club, reached the final with a second-round knckout of Adam Saleta, of Livingston Boxing Club, in their last-four clash last month.

Success at the weekend represents second time lucky for the East Lothian Council employee – he reached the final of the heavyweight class four years ago but lost out to Stephen Lavelle, who went on to win bronze at the Commonwealth Games later that year.
