BOWLS legend Alex Marshall has opened his Commonwealth Games campaign with victory in the men's pairs. 

Tranent resident Marshall and his close friend Paul Foster, a former East Lothian player, saw off a team from Niue - a small island nation in the South Pacific Ocean - this morning (Thursday). 

They ran out 14-11 winners on the first day of competition on Australia's Gold Coast. 

Follow Bowls Scotland and Team Scotland on social media for updates on Marshall's progress as they battle Malaysia, Norfolk Island, India, and Samoa in section D.

Cockenzie and Port Seton bowler Derek Oliver (pictured below) is also in action Down Under.

He will compete in the  men's triples alongside Ronnie Duncan and Darren Burnett - they are in a pool with Northern Ireland, Norfolk Island, Malaysia, Cook Islands.

And the 33-year-old joins Duncan, Foster and fellow Garden County star Marshall in the men's fours team where they will battle England, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam.
