TWO-TIME world darts champion Gary Anderson’s quest for a third title was ended by legend-of-the-sport Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor at the quarter-final stage.

Anderson had made it through to the last eight of the PDC World Championship at Alexandra Palace in London, where he faced Taylor, who had previously announced he was retiring from the sport at the end of the competition.

Musselburgh ace Anderson, who won the 2015 and 2016 titles, put up a good fight but ultimately went down 5-3 to 16-time champion Taylor to go out of the championship.

But there was to be no fairytale 17th title for Taylor – he beat Welshman Jamie Lewis in the semi-finals but was stunned 7-2 in the final by debutant Rob Cross (pictured below by Steve Welsh/PA Wire showing off the trophy).

East Lothian Courier:

He only turned professional at the start of 2017, and denied Taylor a fairytale finale with a stunning performance.

Anderson passed on his congratulations to the new champion, who beat 2017 winner Michael van Gerwen in the semi-final.
