COASTAL rowing clubs from around Scotland will travel to North Berwick for the local club’s annual regatta on Saturday.

Sixteen clubs from as far away as Wester Ross will join county neighbours Dunbar, Boatie Blest from Port Seton, and Musselburgh’s Eskmuthe Rowing Club for a day’s racing in men’s, ladies’ and mixed categories.

Stiff competition is expected, particularly from Eastern Amateur Rowing club in Portobello and St Ayles RC from Anstruther, although other clubs will be trying to challenge the traditional leaders.

The event is popular within the coastal rowing community and is seen as a test of seamanship as well as strength and technique, especially if the sea is rough.

Eleven races are scheduled for the day, starting at 10am,with categories ranging from under-19s to over-60s.

Sandy Wallace, race organiser, told Courier Sport: “We have always had very successful regattas here and with the number of entries this year we are looking forward to welcoming skiffies from near and far and wish them and their clubs the best of luck.”

He also encouraged spectators to come down to the harbour wall to see the action.
