COUNTY stars produced superb performances at the Special Olympics GB National Games in Sheffield, returning with a host of medals.

Four swimming starlets led the way for the Special Olympics Lothian Team as they won 13 medals.

Sarah Calder, 29, of Musselburgh Swimming Club and Lothian Racers, picked up three gold medals and a silver.

Her Musselburgh team-mate, 16-year-old Christian Buchanan, who also trains with Lothian Racers, won a silver and three bronze medals.

And the success continued thanks to Haddington Swimming Club’s Sarah Bleakley, as the 17-year-old, who also trains with Lothian Racers, claimed a gold and a silver medal.

Her younger brother Dylan, 14, an East Lothian Swim Team member, also walked away with a silver and two bronze medals from the championships, which took place at Ponds Forge International Swimming Centre.

Jack Calder, chairman of Musselburgh Swimming Club, said: “Their families were there to support them and they all performed magnificently in achieving their well-deserved successes for their commitment to training over the past year, especially in the lead-up to the games. Their families, coaches and clubs are justifiably extremely proud off them.”

Elsewhere, 21-year-old Jodie Lavin from Haddington added to the impressive Lothian team haul with a gold medal in the Boccia, bettering her silver medal from her previous Special Olympics outing in Bath for years ago.

She was cheered on by her family, who said they were “extremely proud” of Jodie’s achievements.
