RUGBY clubs across the county have shown their support for a stricken former star.

Former Scotland and British & Irish Lions lock Doddie Weir this week announced he had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND).

Weir, who earned 61 caps, announced his diagnosis on Tuesday to raise awareness of the condition ahead of Global MND Awareness Day on Wednesday.

He said: ‘’Over the past few months a number of friends and family have raised concerns surrounding my health.

“I think, then, that on this day set to help raise awareness of the condition, I should confirm that I too have motor neurone disease.

“I should like to take this opportunity to thank the National Health Service in recognising then diagnosing this as yet incurable disease.

“I am currently on holiday in New Zealand with Kathy and the boys and when we return I will devote my time towards assisting research and raising awareness and funds to help support fellow sufferers.”

Preston Lodge RFC showed their support, tweeting: “Sorry to hear the news Doddie, from all at Preston Lodge RFC”, while Haddington RFC wrote: “All at Haddington RFC are saddened to hear this awful news. Our best wishes are with Doddie Weir and his family”

Scott Glynn, the charity fundraiser and after-dinner speaker from Tranent, also posted a picture of himself with Weir at a charity function.

A former opponent of Weir, South Africa legend Joost Van Der Westhuizen, died in February at the age of 45 after a six-year battle with the condition.
