MUSSELBURGH Athletic fell into the East Superleague relegation zone after they lost 1-0 to Newtongrange Star yesterday (Wednesday) evening.
Errol Douglas grabbed the game's only goal to give Newtongrange - managed by former Burgh boss Stevie McLeish - a valuable three points.
He scambled a header past Burgh keeper Ally Adams after Gary Hamilton, a former favourite with the Olive Bank faithful now with the Midlothian club, had his effort blocked.
Burgh were lucky not to be 2-0 down as Douglas missed a good chance shortly after, while Calvin Shand's side had appeals for a penalty waved away shortly before the break.
Ally Adams produced a fine save to keep the score at 1-0 just before the hour, and McManus squandered Burgh's best chance when he headed over deep in injury time.
Shand's side are now second-from-bottom, one point better off than Jeanfield Swifts and Linlithgow Rose.
Burgh do, though, have four games in hand on 12th-place Newtongrange, who are only a further point better off.
Burgh host bottom club Fauldhouse United on Saturday.
Musselburgh Athletic: Adams, McManus, Lynch, Hogg, O'Kane, Murphy, Cherrie, Murray, King, Donaldson, Moffat
