A FORMER British and Irish Lion pulled on his boots at North Berwick 7s at the weekend, but was unable to help the home club win the title.

Nathan Hines, who played for the Lions in 2009 and won 77 caps for Scotland, turned out for the North Berwick 2nd VII and helped them to a place in the semi-finals.

The 40-year-old, a coach at the Recreation Park club, was joined by 1st XV regulars Liam West and Gareth Walker in the side, but they were beaten by eventual winners Musselburgh in the last four.

In the other half of the draw, the hosts’ 1st VII reached the semi-finals before their run was ended by a North Berwick Exiles outfit.

After a closely-contested final, Burgh came out on top to claim the trophy.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, the host club celebrated success as their U18 side won the 10s competition, with four wins from as many outings.

The Josh Stewart Memorial Trophy, awarded to the U18 player who epitomises the spirit of rugby, was jointly awarded to Aidan Burns and Matt Pearson, and presented by North Berwick’s Scotland Women internationalist Megan Gaffney.

The club thanked all those – from sponsors of the U18 and senior events to volunteers – who helped make the event a success. again this year.
