RACING ace Paul McClung claimed race victory on his Thundersport GB Elite debut at Donington Park at the weekend.

McClung, from Haddington, claimed a second-place finish in the first race, which was won by Phil Crowe aboard his Handtrans BMW.

Paul’s mum Mary was delighted with a podium finish in the first race, while the former Knox Academy pupil went one better in the first race on Sunday.

He took the lead in the final lap and held on to record a first victory.

Mary said she was “super proud” of her son’s efforts, and he concluded the weekend’s racing with another second-place finish in the final race.

Paul told Courier Sport he was “well chuffed” with his weekend’s work.

He added: “The weekend went really well racing with some of the top boys in Britain.

“We got the new bike working very well and were able to push on to get three brilliant finishes.

“It was brilliant to get the win this early in the season; it just shows us that we can and will be fighting for the championship. “

He is set to return to championship action at Snetterton, in Norfolk.

The 20-year-old added: “I’m really looking forward to Snetterton now.

“It is a new track for me but I’m sure I will be fighting for top-five finishes.”
