A SCOTTISH Junior Cup finalist returned to Musselburgh Athletic last week.

Goalkeeper Ally Adams re-joined Burgh from county rivals Tranent Juniors, and was on the bench for their defeat to Broxburn Athletic at Olive Bank.

The 25-year-old was a mainstay of the side that reached the 2015 Scottish Junior Cup final at Rugby Park, playing in the final at Kilmarnock’s Rugby Park, where Burgh were beaten 2-1 by Auchinleck Talbot.

That summer, the stopper departed for Linlithgow Rose, before joining Tranent last September.

Adams told Courier Sport: “My boss at work was insisting I worked Saturdays so I spoke to Darren [Smith, Tranent Juniors co-manager] and explained that I wouldn’t be able to play much between now and the end of the season. I spoke to Calvin Shand [Musselburgh Athletic manager] and he said he wanted to sign me.

“The way it’s worked out is quite good because I’ve now got a new boss at work and I’ll be available for Musselburgh.

“I was really enjoying my time at Tranent but it’s good to be back in the Superleague – it all happened so fast.”

The goalkeeper joins a squad almost entirely different to the one he left in 2015 – only Jed Davie remains.

Adams said: “It has been a massive turnaround since I left – only wee Jed is left from the boys that got to the final, but there’s other boys like Kieron Renton who I’ve played with before when I first started in the juniors six or seven years ago now.

“It has all the potential to be a right good set-up.

“I’ve worked with Calvin before – he was the assistant at Linlithgow Rose when I was there and I know Geordie [Kevin McDonald, assistant manager] pretty well so I know what they want and I know how professional they are.”

The keeper was, though, in no doubt about Burgh’s goals for the remainder of the campaign – to secure their East Superleague status.

Shand’s men are 12th in the league, but with the side immediately below them, Linlithgow Rose, having three games in hand, Adams insists Burgh are not out of the woods yet.

“We’re definitely in a relegation battle,” he said.

The 25-year-old, who was on on the bench when Burgh reached the Scottish Junior Cup final in 2011, added: “I’ll be working hard in training to get my way in and doing my best to keep us in the division.”
