MUSSELBURGH snooker ace Ross Muir beat legend-of-the-sport Jimmy White at the Snooker Shoot-out in Watford.

The 21-year-old beat the six-time world championship finalist in the third round of the one-frame knockout competition on Sunday.

He hit a superb 70 break to see off ‘the Whirlwind’, and book a last-16 clash with Anthony Hamilton.

That was where Muir’s run in the competition came to an end, as he was beaten by the defending German Masters champion.

On his way to the last 16, former Musselburgh Grammar School pupil Muir beat Martin O’Donnell in the first round, and saw off Michael Holt in round two to set up the meeting with 52-year-old White, now ranked 102 in the world.

The event was won by Glasgow’s Anthony McGill, who beat Xiao Guodong in the final.
