MICKY Yule hailed a "great start" to his season, after winning bronze at the Dubai para-powerlifting World Cup.

Yule, from Wallyford, claimed the bronze medal this afternoon (Wednesday) with a mammoth lift of 185kg, but failed with his final attempt, at 188kg.

His rival Shadi Issa, from Syria, was successful with a 188kg lift to secure silver, while the event was won by Jordan's Abdelkareem Mohmmad Ahmad Khattab, who lifted 210kg - more than 33 stones.

The event was Yule's season-opener, and the 38-year-old was pleased with his performance.

He tweeted: "Great start to the season. Bronze medal at the Dubai World Cup. Onwards to the GoldCoast."

Yule, a former staff sergeant in the army who lost both legs after stepping on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan in 2010, hopes to be part of Team Scotland at the Games in Australia next summer.

He was part of the team for the 2014 Games in Glasgow, and represented Team GB at the Olmypics in Rio last summer.
