AN EAST Lothian family has enjoyed success at a jiu jitsu event in California, returning with three medals.

Duncan, Oliver and Rory Anderson, from near Innerwick, travelled to the American Jiu Jitsu Championships in Long Beach, and returned with a hat-trick of medals.

First to take to the mat was seven-year-old Duncan, who stormed his category ot reach the final, and claimed the gold medal after winning with an armbar submission move.

Buoyed on by his brother's success, nine-year-old Rory also impressed to reach the semi-finals of his section, and used an armbar submission move to win and progress to the final.

He came up against a more experienced opponent, but still walked away with the silver medal.

Rory, who competed in the event 12 months ago and won a bronze medal, returned looking to better his efforts, but after an eye-catching display, was beaten in his semi-final clash.

He claimed bronze again, though, much to the delight of mum Moya, who hailed an "amazing achievement" less than two years after the trio took up the sport.

From California, she told Courier Sport: "We are just so unbelievably proud of the three boys.

That their dedication at such a young age to the sport has shown so well already – they all hold National, European and now World titles in such a short space of time.

Meanwhile, the boys' coach Thiago Ferreira said: "It's unbelievable that the only three Scottish kids in competition came home with podium finishes.

"I feel a bit bad for Rory as he really could have had a great shot at gold if things had gone differently.

"The standard of the competition was really high this year, the Americans have access to high level tournaments week in week out so to compete and dominate was fabulous.

"I am so proud, but already looking for ways to help our guys with different training to get them stronger still."
