EAST Lothian’s badminton starlets certainly made their presence felt at the Lothian Restricted Tournament at Meadowbank.

Events were held for U11-19 age groups, with players allowed to compete in their own age category and the one above if they wished.

The Campbell family, from Dunbar, were to the fore. Euan was awarded the Hamish Millar Trophy as the U14 player showing most potential, while Lewis was awarded the Joe Tait Trophy for the most improved U18 player.

Euan was a semi-finalist in the U15 singles, finalist in U15 boys’ doubles and won the U15 mixed doubles, alongside North Berwick’s Jess Rae.

Alastair, meanwhile, won the U17 boys’ doubles with North Berwick’s James Guckian, while the Dunbar ace was also a finalist in the U17 singles, which he lost to Aberlady’s Ewan Mathieson, while Alastair also won the U19 boys’ singles by beating brother Lewis in the final.

Lewis won the U19 boys’ doubles alongside Mathieson, while he was a finalist in the U17 doubles with Longniddry’s Archie Bryden.

In all, East Lothian shuttlers took home 10 titles and 13 runners-up medals, in addition to the prestigious awards for Euan and Lewis.

Ben Riddle, North Berwick, was U11 singles winner, while Lois Turnbull, also North Berwick, was a triple winner in the U13 age group.

Riddle added three U13 runners-up medals to his U11 singles win by partnering Harry Bent in the boys’ doubles and Katie Taylor, of Dunbar, in the mixed doubles event.

Jess Rae added the runner-up medal in the singles to her mixed doubled medal, while Emma Lessels, Longniddry, and Haddington’s Amanda Martin were finalists in the U15 girls’ doubles.

Ellie Bent and Niamh Taylor, of North Berwick and Dunbar respectively, reached the U11 girls’ doubles final, while Callum Jack and Aberlady’s Cameron Lee made the U11 boys’ doubles final.

Irene Blair, coach, hailed their efforts, and thanked everyone for their support. She said: “A great two days of exciting play, and many [players] have another year to compete in the same age groups, which looks very promising for the future.

“Many thanks to all parents for travel arrangements and encouragement throughout the year at all tournaments both near and far.”
