A PAIR of East Lothian rugby stars were celebrating league title glory on Sunday afternoon.

Sarah McCormack and Sula Callender, from Musselburgh and Tranent respectively, helped Murrayfield Wanderers to their third successive BT Women’s Premier League title.

They secured the title with an 18-12 victory over closest rivals Hillhead Jordanhill on the back pitches at BT Murrayfield.

The home side trailed 10-12 at half-time but fought back in the second half, as a try from Lisa Robertson and late penalty by Scotland Women captain Lisa Martin sealed the title.

McCormack, 25, started the match in the second row, and was joined on the pitch from the bench by Callender, a former Ross High School pupil.

The 23-year-old told Courier Sport: “It was a great game against tough opposition and to come away with the win was amazing.

“It was also a great opportunity for me to get to play alongside and against so many Scottish internationals.”

McCormack, meanwhile, said she was “so proud”.

She added: “Words cannot describe how happy I am. It was a very demanding game, both physically and mentally and I am so proud of the team. We’ve worked really hard to be where we are and winning titles like this makes it all worth it.”

And less than 24 hours after lifting the trophy, she turned her attentions to a fourth consecutive success next year.

McCormack added: “I can’t wait to get back to training and focus on retaining the title.”

Meanwhile, Callender only took up the sport three years ago, and combines her rugby commitments with studying four days at Borders College, to which she travels from Tranent.

She said: “I enjoy playing rugby because I find it a good outlet for stress.

“I’m kept very busy by my course and playing for two teams [she also represents RHC].”

She is the only female student ever to have enrolled onto the Borders College Rugby programme, where she is in her first year.

Elsewhere, another pair of county stars helped the University of Edinburgh remain in contention for their league title.

Scotland Women caps Megan Gaffney and Lizzy Musgrove, both from North Berwick, were among the university side that beat league leaders Durham 47-12 at Peffermill on Saturday.

Gaffney crossed for two tries in the second half, while there was also a hat-trick from the Scotland wing Rhona Lloyd.
