COUNTY rugby ace Tommy Spinks admits he is "loving" being back at Glasgow Hawks this season.

Spinks, from North Berwick, left English Championship outfit Jersey in the summer, and returned to Old Anniesland, where he spent time playing during his spell with Glasgow Warriors.

The 22-year-old linked up with a fellow East Lothian ace, with former Haddington and Dunbar man Finlay Gillies appointed Hawks' head coach in the summer.

Gillies handed Spinks the captaincy, and he has relished his return to the club, and the responsibility of leading the side.

He told Courier Sport: "I've loved playing back in Scotland, and we had a great start to the season with some outstanding performances.

"Those are in the past now, and it's a case of continuing to show our ability as a team.

"I spoke to Finn a lot about the captaincy as Brendan ]McGroarty] was captain last season, but it's a role I've had before.

"Brendan had done a brilliant job but it is an area I have experience in and I'm very fortunate Finn has given me the opportunity.

Prior to joining Jersey in summer 2015, Spinks made two Pro12 appearances for Glasgow Warriors, as well as playing twice in the LV Cup for Ospreys during a loan spell.

Club colleagues Matt Fagerson and Sam Thomson have both been drafted in to the Warriors squad this term, along with Rob McAlpine of Ayr, and Spinks admits that is tough.

He added: "I would love to be back involved with the squad but my situation has changed slightly.

"Returning from Jersey this year and playing for Hawks has meant I have had to start working.

"Rugby has always been my main motivation in life and if I was offered the opportunity to be contracted within Scotland again I would love to sit down and talk about it.

"It is frustrating seeing so many players get called in and out of the squad.

"Glasgow have been unlucky with their back row and second row injuries and I would love the chance to get involved and prove myself, but I couldn't do it without a certain level of commitment.

While Spinks admitted he "loved" his year at Scotstoun, he is keen to focus on Hawks, who currently sit third in the BT Premiership.

He added: "I want to enjoy playing and do it regularly."
