A COUNTY-BASED gymnastics team was celebrating success after seven members were part of the GB squad at the European Championships in Maribor.

The seven, from Saltire Gymnastics who are based at Meadowmill, helped the Great Britain team to its most successful European championships ever.

The junior men’s team, including East Lothian’s Fraser McLeod, won bronze – GB’s first ever medal at the championships.

Saltire’s representatives from the county were McLeod, Lara Craig and Katie Vince, who teamed up with Kendal Smith, from the Borders, and Fife’s Dylan Campbell and Sandy Wallace.

Margaret Kerr, the club’s head coach, said: “The club is so proud of the achievements of these gymnasts, and the work the club’s coaches have put in to helping them achieve this.

“This is the first time a GB squad has been formed for TeamGym [type of competition] and for the club to have seven gymnasts representing at this level is fantastic.

"They follow in the footsteps of the club’s senior women, who in 2010 were the first Scottish Women’s team to represent GB at the Europeans.

“They will now be role models for gymnasts of all ages in our club to aspire to.’’

Louise Whyte, Saltire Team Gymnastics club development manager, added: “This is a huge accolade for TeamGym in Scotland, as this is the pinnacle event in the TeamGym competition calendar and the highest level of representation a gymnast can achieve in our discipline.

“The club would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to those individuals and organisations who helped to support the fundraising efforts of our gymnasts as they reached the championships.”
